Interview with Adele De’Ath (17/12/24)

Recently, I spoke with Adele De’Ath, and I learned a lot of interesting information about the band! We spoke about origins, touring, future plans and more, all of which you can see below!

Firstly, introduce yourselves! How long has the band been around for? Where are you from?
Adele: Hi! I’m Adele De’Ath! Thank you very much for the opportunity to share some of our thoughts and experiences with you. Although I started this project a few years ago in 2018, the band is newly formed, back in late summer 2024. I am incredibly fortunate to be joined by Kathy on keyboard/vocals, Theo on guitar, Luke on guitar/vocals, Chris on bass/vocals and Jack on drums. They are a lovely bunch. We all live in and around Sheffield.

Who are some of your biggest inspirations?
Chris: I love a wide range of musical styles and I think every genre offers something new, a technique, a tone, a chord progression, a production style. I draw on a myriad of these when composing and playing. To nail it down to some specific players, I aspire towards the tone, syncopation and pocket of jazz player Marcus Miller, the effortless style and fluidity of fusion player and band leader of Snarky Puppy, Michael League and the composition and performance of Blind Guardian’s Hansi Kürsch and Avantasia’s Tobias Sammet.

Who did you listen to growing up? Did any of these artists influence your sound you have today?
Luke: I spent most of my formative years listening to a LOT of metal. From classic heavy metal, to power metal, then ending up straying into progressive and hardcore metal with Between the Buried and Me becoming one of my favourite bands of all time. Mixed in amongst all that chugging and blast beats though, was the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd and a whole host of other progressive music that probably became a bigger influence on my sound than all that metal. To this day I still can’t shred but I do enjoy a nice slow blues solo with plenty of delay!

Do you have anywhere you’d like to perform one day? Maybe a certain country or festival?
Chris: Without hesitation, I’d love to perform at Wacken Open Air festival, the scale and legacy of Wacken is second-t0-none.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Luke: I initially answered this with the biggest gig I’d played, but that didn’t sit right with me. So I thought a bit more and realised, simply the fact that some people listen to the music I’ve been part of creating. The Spotify wrapped for my other band showed that 1000 individuals listened to our music this year, despite the fact that we played maybe 5 gigs and haven’t released anything new since 2016. So yeah, that’s it, the fact I have released music that people like to listen to.

Last year, you released the single “Story Untold”. What can you tell us about the song? What does the song mean to you?
Adele: This song was a much needed therapy song for me, and so will always hold a special place in my heart. The song is about someone who was very dear to me, who suffers with many chronic health conditions. He is also a singer, writer and composer. From my perspective, I felt like he was often spending today waiting for a better tomorrow, and allowed his health to be a barrier to connection, leaving him feeling cut off from those he loves. Now I am the one with a chronic health condition, it serves me as a reminder of the importance of being connected to loved ones, and to appreciate everyday I am alive.

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would you choose and why?
Chris: I’m incredibly lucky to know some amazingly talented musicians and even more so to be able to collaborate with them on this project. So I’d choose this lovely bunch of folk because I can’t wait to hear what we can achieve together next.

How has 2024 been for the band? What are some of your biggest achievements this year?
Adele: 2024 has been a very exciting year; the band was formed, and after a few months of learning the material, we are in rehearsals and preparing for quite a busy schedule next year. I think our biggest achievement so far was getting through the first rehearsal, we were still laughing at the end of it – a good sign!

Do you have any plans for 2025? Maybe gigs, or new music?
Luke: Joining Adele and the rest of the band and starting this new musical journey is the big thing for 2025 for me! She’s already been active in booking shows all over the place so it looks like we’ll be getting off to a running start for sure. Right now I think we’re all focused on learning the music and getting ready for those first gigs, but I’m genuinely excited about the potential of working together with everyone and seeing what comes next.

Where do you hope to see yourselves in a few years time? Do you hope to have achieved anything by then?
Chris: As a band, I’d really like to see us producing fantastic new symphonic and power metal (there’s just not enough in the world), building a fan base and earning the opportunity to gig with some of the great powerhouses of the genre. Between now and then, let’s build dream worlds and take our audiences on a journey to far away realms and share in our adventures.

What is your favourite part about making music and being in a band?
Luke: That’s got to be gigging. I have struggled over the years with a lack of self confidence in my playing, but when I get up on stage in front of a crowd that’s enjoying themselves, there’s no feeling quite like it. All those fears and doubts melt away and it’s just a bunch of people enjoying a moment in time. Even after all these years I still get a rush of adrenaline and endorphins from gigging, whether it’s to 3 people, 30 people, or 3000, it’s the same.

When creating new music, is it a long process, or does writing it come quickly and naturally?
Adele: Broadly speaking, there is not much about me that is natural! But it really does depend on the song; some of the songs are indulgent therapy sessions, like “Enemy”, “Skin Hunger” and “Story Untold”, they come quite quickly, lyrically at least. Others where I am writing from the perspective of a character, or observing a story, like “Pennyfields” or “Poison in the Pages”, can take a little longer, perhaps because I am pushing to view from another perspective. I have been fortunate to work with very talented producers who make short work from taking my demos to amazing finished tracks.

What is your favourite song out of your discography so far and why?
Chris: For me, “Enemy” is currently top of the bill, it’s huge, it drives hard and is so much fun to perform.

Do you have any advice for anyone who is thinking of starting their own band?
Luke: Stop thinking about it and just do it. But do it because you enjoy it, not because you want to “make it”. As long as you’re having fun and making music that you enjoy, that’s all that matters. Find some like-minded people, get in a room together, laugh, talk, play music, and see where it takes you. Oh, and don’t drink too much before a gig! That’s one I learned the hard way, haha!

Thanks so much for your time! To wrap this up, do you have anything you’d like to say to your fans and anyone that has supported you over the years?
Adele: I would like to say a heartfelt thank you for all the support and encouragement you have generously given in abundance whilst this project has grown from an online solo project to a live touring band. We look forward to seeing you all on the road, and thank you for your continued love whilst we grow into our new form.
